Scarifiers and lawn aerators: For the optimum health of your lawn

Scarifiers are important tools for your lawn, just as lawn mowers and strimmers are. Scarifying after the first mowing of the grass in spring promotes grass growth. Scarifiers and lawn aerators break up the grass, loosen moss, old grass residue and other matted material. This enables the lawn to breathe better. The scarifier can be used again in autumn at the end of the season.

Scarifiers from IKRA are delivered with two rollers: Scarifying roller and aerating roller - the rollers can be quickly changed. Whilst you use the scarifying roller only at the start and end of the grass-growing season, you can optionally use the aerating roller after each mowing of the lawn to aerate the lawn.

Arrange your "Lawn team" from IKRA for perfect lawn care: Lawn mowers for mowing flat lawn areas, strimmers for trimming the edges at pathways and walls and scarifiers for aerating the lawn. 3 tools - 1 result: A healthy and beautiful lawn

Scarifiers

A healthy lawn with scarifiers and lawn aerators

The scraping of the turf is known as "scarifying" in gardening circles. Scarifying rakes the grass roots that lie in the top of the soil. The scraping of the roots encourages the roots to grow stronger and this makes the grass more dense. Dead blades of grass, clover, weeds and moss are also removed with the help of the scarifier. If moss and matting no longer cover the spaces between the grass stalks, this ensures better aeration and water supply for the roots as well as better nutrient uptake. Scarifying is essential for a healthy lawn. If a lot of weeds and moss have formed in the lawn, scarifying, raking of the turf, is absolutely essential.

If too much moss and too many weeds have formed in the spaces between the blades, this is a sign that the ground is poorly aerated and damp. As moss loves moisture, waterlogging and too much moisture is damaging for your lawn. The soil gets less and less oxygen as the moss grows and increases. The lawn literally "chokes" and "drowns" and gradually dies. This is where the scarifier makes its well-earned and important appearance for your lawn. It rectifies the oxygen-robbing and rampant moss and allows important oxygen to reach the grass roots once again through the scarifying and removal of the moss. It is important that the blades of grass are no higher than 4 cm for the scarifying. The ground and the grass should be dry when carrying out scarifying. You will only achieve a perfect scarifying result when the length of the grass is correct and the grass is not too wet. After scarifying you can re-seed any bald patches or add sand, chalk or even fertiliser. Do not scarify the lawn when it is too cold or when it is too hot. Ideally scarifying should be carried out when the temperature is between 8 and 22 degrees Celsius.

Banish moss from your lawn in good time by scarifying (moss removal) before the moss takes over the lawn and displaces the lawn plants. Scarifiers are also known as moss removers due to their moss removal capabilities. The tool is a reliable aid with lawn care. When operating, the lawn scarifier loosens the soil between the grass and penetrates the soil vertically with the steel blades on its scarifying roller and in doing do tears the flat-propagating moss patches out along with their roots. Matted grass and dead grass residue are also simply removed by scarifying. The grass roots are raked for better and more dense growth. The grass roots are not badly damaged by being cut by the scarifier. The raking of the roots does not damage the grass plant. Drive the scarifier over the lawn first lengthways and then crossways in order to combat moss over large areas and to aerate the lawn. You can prevent your lawn becoming matted and invaded by moss with this useful gardening tool. IKRA combination scarifiers / lawn aerators (combination tools) have a practical collection bag so that there is no laborious raking of the lawn required after scarifying. The collection bag reliably collects matting, moss and clover. The container can be simply removed and emptied out at the compost heap or into the organic waste bin. The minimises the time and effort required enormously.

What is the difference between a scarifier and a lawn aerator?

2in1 combination devices have scarifying and aerating functions. When scarifying the ground, the steel blades penetrate the ground and carve it open for aeration. The roots of the grass are also raked. This ensures better and more dense growth. Moss and flat-propagating weeds are simply removed. The lawn aerator (or ground aerator) does not penetrate the ground with its sprung steel tines. Here moss, old cuttings, leaves, dead blades, etc. are removed only from the surface between the blades in order to make the grass more healthy. The aerator can be used much more often for all-year-round lawn care, e.g. after every mowing of the lawn. The scarifier should only be used twice (maximum three times) per year.

Wellness for your lawn: Why should the lawn be scarified?

If the grass is severely matted it can quickly succumb to disease or die. Bald patches may appear. In addition, if there is too much moss and matting the ground can become "clogged" and covered with the result that rainwater no longer trickles down into the soil properly in order to provide the grass roots with adequate water. Waterlogging occurs and the grass "drowns". Additionally, if there is too much moisture on the grass and waterlogging, moss and fungi species settle in and spread. The lawn gradually dies. Scarifying and lawn aerating removes moss, fungus and matting. This ensures that oxygen and water can reach the grass roots once again without impediment. So scarifying prevents the spread of moss and fungus on your lawn. Remove these growths from your grass so that you always have a healthy lawn. You can also use sand or chalk to support scarifying and aerating to effectively combat moss.

Quick guide why you should scarify

  • Raking the grass roots for denser growth
  • Removal of moss and matting for better aeration and water permeability
  • Better drainage of water and waterlogging
  • Lawns become healthier, formation and spread of moss and fungus is minimised

Regular scarifying makes the lawn denser and healthier - why should you scarify?

Scarifying is advisable as the first stage of lawn care, after the first mowing, in the spring - March or April is ideal for this, for example. First cut the grass to ca. two to four centimetres with the lawn mower and then use the scarifier. Ideally, you should scarify the lawn lengthways and then crossways. This will yield the best results. Scarifying not only provides your lawn with more air, but also provides better water permeability for the ground. Your lawn is now better supplied with oxygen and water. Nutrients are also now better able to reach the root system again. The lawn looks healthier again thanks to the scarifying and is significantly denser and more robust. The lawn will thank you for the scarifying with dense, strengthened growth. Beautiful, soft, bright green grass blades will arise afterwards and will be able to grow perfectly and cover the ground thanks to the improved air supply and water supply. It is also possible to scarify again in the autumn, for example in September/October, or after a rainy spring or summer in order to ensure that the lawn is supplied with even more oxygen. Rainy periods encourage the growth of moss. But, do not scarify the lawn too often and not just before the winter frost. After scarifying, the lawn always requires a little time to regenerate.

Tips for scarifying

Quick overview of how to scarify and aerate

Scarifying in spring (e.g. March or April)

  • Selecting the day: An ideal day for the first lawn mowing of the season would be a cloudy spring day with a temperature of 8 - 22 degrees Celsius
  • Cut dry grass with the lawn mower to max. 4 cm and min. 2 cm
  • Set the working depth of the scarifier individually
  • Run over the lawn area with the scarifier at the same speed (walking speed) - not too fast and not too slow and do not stay stationary
  • When turning, tilt the blades upwards and turn the device for the next pass
  • Scarify in a cross-hatched pattern: First run over the lawn lengthways and then crossways
  • Run over each strip lengthways and then crossways only once, do not run over the same strip too often
  • Empty the collection bag from time to time (organic waste bin or compost)
  • Re-seed bald patches with new grass seed
  • Fertilise lawn area (nutrient feed with nitrogen-rich lawn fertiliser)
  • Sprinkle sand or chalk over the complete lawn if you wish
  • Treat the lawn to a regeneration period after scarifying
  • Fertilise it at regular intervals and ensure that it is well watered
  • Do not mow the lawn until 14 days have passed and then mow it regularly until the end of the growth period
  • With subsequent mowing, you can also aerate the lawn at regular intervals with the aerating roller

Scarifying in autumn (e.g. September/October)

  • Selecting the day: An ideal day for lawn mowing before the autumn scarifying would be a cloudy autumn day with a temperature of 8 - 22 degrees Celsius
  • Re-seed bald patches with new grass seed, fertilise with grass fertiliser of required (the ground must still be warm enough for growth so do not scarify too late into the autumn)
  • Fertilise whole lawn area (use autumn fertiliser with a high proportion of potassium)
  • Sprinkle sand or chalk over the complete lawn if you wish
  • Treat the lawn to a regeneration period after scarifying, mow only every 14 days in the autumn

Re-seed, spread sand, chalk or fertiliser

Re-seeding:
If there are bald patches on the lawn after scarifying, sow new seed in order to close the gaps. Holes in the lawn not only look bad, they can be places for weeds to take hold and spread in place of the grass. Make sure that the re-seeded areas are watered regularly.

Spreading sand:
In order to restrict the growth of moss and to promote the health of the lawn, you can spread sand on the lawn after scarifying in spring in the growth phase of the grass. The effect of the sanding can be enhanced by aerating the lawn with the lawn aerating attachment, ca. one week after adding the sand. Particularly solid and loamy soil benefits from the introduction of sand as the soil replacement, causes better aeration of the roots, and reduces moss formation as the water is better able to drain off.

Spreading chalk:
You can spread chalk on the lawn after scarifying in spring or autumn in order to curb the growth of the moss. Determine the pH value of the ground before adding the chalk in order to use the chalk in accordance with needs. If the pH value is significantly below the neutral value of 7, the soil is too acid. Ideal values for soil are ca. 5.5 - 6.5 pH.

Spreading fertiliser:
You can spread lawn fertiliser on the lawn after scarifying in spring in order to supply sufficient nutrients and to support the growth of the grass. Use autumn fertiliser after scarifying in the autumn. This special potassium-rich and low-nitrogen fertiliser does not promote growth but rather provides the lawn with strength in its composition for the coming winter

Calendar for scarifiers & lawn aerators

Spring
After the first mowing of the lawn with the lawn mower, e.g. in March or April, you can use the scarifier for the first time for raking the turf and to remove the moss. With an ideal temperature of 8 - 22 degrees, you can spread chalk or sand, after scarifying. If there are gaps, these should be re-seeded and then always treat the grass to a "recovery phase" after scarifying

Summer
If the summer is too wet and there is a lot of waterlogging and moss on the lawn, you can use the scarifier for a second time. Weigh up how mossy the lawn is in a moist and wet summer - do not scarify too often, ideally you should only scarify the lawn 2x per year (spring and autumn) and not when it is too hot

Autumn
In order to ensure that the lawn is going into the winter in a healthy state and to free it of moss and matting again in the autumn, it is worth using the scarifier once again with the last lawn mowing of the year, e.g. in October. It should not be too cold for scarifying. Ideally it should be 8 - 22 degrees. Apply autumn fertiliser afterwards so that the grass is healthy and ready to face the winter and always treat the grass to a "recovery phase" after scarifying

Winter
Scarify the lawn in late autumn but not too close to the first frost as the lawn must first recover after each scarifying procedure. It cannot do this when there is frost. Take a break from scarifying in the winter
