Brushcutters & scythes: Razor-sharp for combating brush and undergrowth

The sharp cutting blades of scythes and brushcutters work effortlessly through the thick-stemmed brush and undergrowth in your garden. For example, the sharp undergrowth cutter makes short work of nettles and thistles.

Brush and undergrowth can be effectively combated with IKRA scythes and brushcutters. The sharp cutting blades cut through stems and branches with ease. This enables you to thin out your garden and clear large areas of weeds.

Besides the effective brush-cutting disc, scythes and brushcutters are also delivered with a practical cutting line spool. This enables you to trim lawn edges too, for example at pathways, house walls and garden walls.

Brushcutters

Combat grass stalks and undergrowth

On the one hand, a cutting line spool is provided with the scythes and brushcutters for effortless trimming of grass stalks, e.g. at edges or underneath a garden bench. Further uses for scythes and brushcutters with the cutting line spool installed for precision trimming can be found below. The thickness of the cutting line is significantly thicker with scythes and brushcutters than with conventional strimmers. The thickness of the cutting lines on these tools is in the range of 2.0 to 2.4 millimetres.

On the other hand, scythes and brushcutters also come with an undergrowth cutter, which can simply replace the cutting line spool on the tool when working with undergrowth. Fit the cutter to remove plants and weeds with thicker stems, such as thistles and nettles for example. Brushcutters are equipped with a straight shaft and have plenty of power to trim lawn edges and mow lawn areas for long periods of time, and of course to remove nettles, weeds and undergrowth with particular ease.

Working with scythes & brushcutters

Scythes / brushcutters with cutting line spools

Check the area of lawn to be mowed and remove any stones, glass shards, wires or similar lying around as these could be picked up and thrown by the scythe/brushcutter or could become entangled in the cutting line. Always ensure that the lawn is dry before trimming or mowing with these tools. Avoid cutting damp or wet grass. The reason for this is that wet grass is harder to cut and also wet grass builds up on the protective cover of the brushcutter or scythe significantly faster. Trim the grass with a right-to-left semi-circular swinging motion whilst keeping the cutting line parallel to the ground.

Move the brushcutter or scythe slowly into the grass to be cut and then out again and then hold the device at the desired cutting depth. Work slowly and carefully. Do not rush when working with the brushcutter or scythe. If you work in too much of a rush, this can result in untidy results. Do not press the trimming head into the unmowed grass with too much force. If you are trimming areas where visibility is poor or where the undergrowth is dense, work with particular care and attention.

Mow the grass in small sections. Start at the top of the grass blades and cut these from the top to the bottom in a downwards motion. This prevents the grass winding around the trimmer head, which can result in damage due to overheating. If you start too deep in long grass, the grass can wind around the trimmer head. If the grass has wound around the trimmer head, stop the trimmer and remove the tangled grass. The IBF-31 brushcutter from IKRA has an innovative grass entanglement protection device for this problem. What is the grass entanglement protection device?

Innovation: Grass entanglement protection:

With conventional brushcutters there is a gap between the angled transmission and the spool. This gap is often several millimetres wide. Grass gladly entangles itself here, particularly when using the brushcutter on tall stalks. This grass is difficult to remove from the gap, especially when it has dried. If this is not removed when the tool is cleaned, the grass entangled in the gap can result in the tool being damaged when started up again. The innovative grass entanglement protection on the IBF-31 prevents grass entanglement. The angular transmission is fitted tight against the spool so that there is no gap where grass can be caught or entangled.

Scythes & brushcutters with cutter attachments

Always use a should strap when working with brushcutters and scythes (this is included in the delivery with IKRA brushcutters and scythes). Fit the shoulder strap and the attachment device to the brushcutter or scythe such that the tool hangs a few centimetres above the ground. Position the cutting blade and the protective cover horizontally, parallel to the ground. Carry the brushcutter or scythe on the right-hand side of your body.

Never cut with a blunt, bent, torn or damaged metal cutting blade. Replace defective or blunt cutting discs immediately. You can purchase replacement cutting discs from us in the IKRA online shop. You cannot achieve good cutting results with blunt blades. A bend blade can be hazardous in operation or may damage the tool.

Before starting with the work, check whether there are any obstacles such as stones, posts, metal pegs, wires or similar on the lawn. If an obstacle cannot be removed, mark the location of the obstacle so that you can avoid it. Metal and stone can blunt the rotating blade upon contact. Metal blades could also be damaged. Wires can become entangled in the blades and can be whipped around or thrown into the air.

The blade can be used to cut tall grass, small twigs and woody weeds. If you are cutting undergrowth with the cutting blade attachment, ensure that you do not cut any particularly sturdy branches that are too thick as this could result in a hard kickback. Branches that are too solid or too thick can become caught in the blade. If something is caught in the blade, switch off the motor immediately and check the motorised brushcutter or scythe and the metal undergrowth cutter for potential damage before continuing with the work.
